Lazy Git Shooting Accessories
Eighteen months ago I bought a Pietta .44 revolver I am a lousy shot with it but I love using it and like everyone else I found loading it a pain.
As it is so easy to remove the cylinder from this type of revolver I always remove it to put the powder and lubricated wads in. Then I replace the cylinder and press the balls in with the rammer then cap and fire.
I found that I could comfortably only load and fire it once in a 15 minute detail; I could do it twice but then rush the shots.
I then bought a loading press this proved most un-satisfactory and I thought I could make something better than this.
I knew what I wanted to make but without access to machine shop tools I couldn’t then I was looking on the internet for something unconnected and came across the clamp that inspired the Lazy Git loading press.
When the clamp came I screwed a couple of pieces of wood together, attached the clamp fitted a pin in the base to locate the cylinder, and ground a bolt down so that it would fit inside the chamber.
I had already been using my speed loading magazines made from once fired cases soldered together. You simply measure your black powder into them and fit the stoppers at home then at the range you remove the stoppers and fill all six chambers at once.
When I took my improvised loading press to the range it soon got a lot of attention and on that first day three people asked me if I could make them one. I was also asked what made me think about making it, I replied because I’m a Lazy Git.
So that’s how Lazy Git shooting Accessories came into being.
For a lazy git I made myself a lot of work I wanted to use hard wood for the press but could not find any pre planed hard wood in anything like the sizes I needed. I found a local timber warehouse which stocked a huge range of hard wood but only sawn planks.
I don’t need much of an excuse to buy more new tools so I bought a plainer-thicknesser so that I could machine the wood myself. The presses also had to be repeatable so I have made loads of jigs and tools to make them all the same.
I have made Lazy Git loading presses for The Pietta .44 new army, Ruger .45 old army, and a Westlake smokeless muzzle loading revolver.
I can make the presses for any muzzle loading revolver where you can remove the chamber for loading. I just need the accurate dimensions of the chamber but I am in the process of making dummy chambers for every make and model I can find

Instructions for using the Lazy Git loading press.
WARNING: The Lazy Git loading press seats the ball/bullet to a precise depth it will not push the ball/bullet onto the powder/filler/wad if the charge does not adequately fill the chamber.
To avoid the possibility of an air gap in the chamber the charge must fill the chamber to a point where it is slightly compressed when the ball/ bullet is inserted. (With revolvers which use Nitro powder ALWAYS follow the manufacturers instructions) 1. Remove the cylinder from your revolver.
2. Charge each chamber with powder /filler or wad. Make sure the charge will be slightly compressed when the ball /bullet is pressed in.
3. Place the cylinder onto the loading press and place a ball/bullet on top of each chamber.
4. Rotate the cylinder and lower the ram and centre the ram onto one of the balls/bullets. Then push the lever all the way down and the ball/bullet is seated. Note: The first time you use the loading press you will have to adjust the ram. Just loosen the locking nut (arrowed) and screw the threaded part of the ram in or out as required to get the correct seating depth then tighten the locking nut.
5. Remove the cylinder from the loading press and refit it to your revolver. All the balls/bullets are seated to the same depth in the cylinder. You are now ready to cap and fire your revolver. (I haven’t found a really quick way to cap your revolver YET!!!)
