Description
PRICE DROP DUE TO REVALUATION.
A very rare 1773 pattern Elliot Light Dragoon Carbine in good condition for its age.
This .65 calibre weapon was designed for use by Light Dragoons during the American War of Independence, but was later used more widely by officers and other non line infantry troops such as artillerymen. This musket is likely to have been intended for this use, since it has sling loops fitted as opposed to a saddle ring.
The carbine is in good condition for a gun that is most likely at least 215 years old, and has more than sufficient wall thickness for it to be fired if desired. However, the cock spring is original and is currently too weak to operate the action with enough force to produce a spark. The action does however cock and there is a little spring tension.
Markings wise, there are black powder proof marks on the breech of the gun and an armourers number stamped into the hand of the stock, indicating that it was an in-service weapon.
The metalwork has a pleasant plum patina, while the stock has been varnished at some point and this has chipped in places. There is also a small split in the stock toward the muzzle of the gun, but this is stable and has not spread since I have had it.
It is an obsolete, off ticket gun, meaning that no licence is required to own it, unless you intend to fire it. This also means it can be displayed as a "wall hanger" without any deactivation or modification.
Fine examples of this weapon can fetch £1500-£2500.
